Betty Hoffman, daughter of Catherine and John Cooke was born 26 August 1939 on Long Island, N.Y. She passed away on the morning of 28 May 2023 surrounded by her family when she succumbed to the ravages of dementia after a long and valiant battle. Betty was married to her loving husband Drake Hoffman for 62 years and together they had three children Christopher, Catherine, and Ann all of whom currently survive her. She is survived also by Lauren, Clayton and David who are children of Chris and Christy Hoffman and by Collette and Justin who are children of Cathy and Richard Dougherty, and by Caleb and Haley who are children of Ann and John Forbes, and by her great-grandchild Willow, daughter of Lauren and husband Seth Baker and by Collette’s husband Bobby Allen. As a devoted Grandmother she often ferried her grandchildren Collette, Justin, Caleb and Haley to many of their swim meets and ball games, always cheering loudly for their success. Ski trips and visits to the beach or pool with her children, grandchildren, and friends along with pleasure cruises with her husband were the highlights of her life. Betty sometimes worked as a Registered Nurse and took great pride in her garden work and flower arranging. As a devoted Navy Wife she often carried the full burden of being both Mother and Dad while her husband was on cruise or deployed and somehow found time to support other Navy wives and their families living under similar circumstances. Betty easily made friends of neighbors and wives of Drake’s shipmates at each of their duty stations. Betty’s cremains will be interred at the Church of The Ascension, VB columbarium after a Celebration of Life Mass there at 1PM on 21 June which will be preceded by a one half hour meet-and-greet. Flowers for that Mass or a donation to Catholic Charities of Eastern Virginia, 1132 Pickett Rd., Norfolk 23502, would be appreciated if you are so inclined. Betty will be deeply missed by family and friends.
