Betty Lou Coolman, affectionately known as “Cocky,” by her great granddaughter, Rae Marie, passed away peacefully on March 29, 2025, in Norfolk, VA, at the age of 86. Born on July 15, 1938, in Amsterdam, NY, Betty lived a life filled with love, passion, and unwavering determination.
Betty was a devoted wife, supporting her beloved husband, Duane Roger Coolman, throughout his distinguished career in the U.S. Navy. Their marriage, spanning 69 wonderful years, was a testament to their enduring love and partnership. She was loving, helpful, stubborn, and determined—a combination that inspired those around her.
Growing up, Betty’s love for softball was evident, and she carried that enthusiasm into her later years as she enjoyed cheering on the Brooklyn Dodgers, to be the eventual Los Angeles Dodgers. Her passion for sports extended to football, where she avidly supported the Detroit Lions and the Oklahoma Sooners. In her later years, she found joy in camping and glamping with her church community and Winnebago group, creating cherished memories in her RV.
A dedicated member of St. Timothy Lutheran Church since 1971, Betty found solace and strength in her faith, which guided her throughout her life. Her church family and friends were an integral part of her journey, providing support and companionship.
Betty was preceded in death by her parents, Elwood and Rosella Garrison, and her son-in-law, Jim Meyers. She leaves behind a loving family: her devoted husband, Duane; her daughter, Sherri Meyers; her son, Jamie Coolman and his wife, Karen; four grandchildren, Justin Coolman (Chelsie), Dakota Coolman (Samantha), Cameron Meyers, and Tanner Meyers (Jillian); and four great-grandchildren, Leah Coolman, Scarlett Coolman, Rae Marie Meyers, and Lucas Coolman.
Betty’s legacy will live on through the love and warmth she shared with her family and friends. Her life was a testament to the power of resilience and the beauty of living with purpose and passion.
A memorial service in celebration of Betty’s life will be held at St. Timothy Lutheran Church on Saturday, May 3, 2025 starting at 11am. Inurnment will be private at AG Horton Memorial Veterans Cemetery in Suffolk, VA.
In this time of remembrance, we find comfort in the extraordinary life Betty led and the countless lives she touched with her kindness and spirit. She will be deeply missed but forever cherished in the hearts of those who knew and loved her.
