Betty Wilson Darden Hodges, a cherished mother, grandmother and great grandmother, peacefully departed on April 15th, 2024. She was born in Norfolk on September 26th, 1928, the second daughter of the late William Henning Darden and Christine Wilson Darden. She was also predeceased by her husband William H. Hodges and her sister Jane Darden Britt.
She is survived by her daughter, Betty Driver McCaa(Jim) and two stepdaughters, Susan Hodges Oldfield and Carol Hodges Moore(David); two grandchildren, Hunter Darden McCaa(Kara) and Margaret Cameron McCaa Simmons(Archie Leland); four great grandchildren, James Gregory McCaa, Madeleine Louise McCaa, Cameron Webster Simmons and Elizabeth Hunter Simmons.
Betty spent her early years in Norfolk County before moving with her family to Virginia Beach in the early 40’s when her parents bought a house on Pocahontas Drive, now 43rd Street, that house is still in her family.
Betty was a graduate of Southern Seminary, both prep and Jr college, in Buena Vista, VA. Graduating in 1946 and 1948. She met many lifelong friends there. She was on The Southern Seminary Board of Directors from 1990-1995.
Living in Norfolk County in 1954, which is now Chesapeake, she was asked to teach the 5th grade at Great Bridge Elementary with an Emergency Certificate, which she did for one year. After moving to Memphis in 1955, she continued her education at the University of Memphis and taught in the West Memphis, Arkansas School System and later at Holy Cross Episcopal Day School. After moving back to Virginia Beach, she received her Real Estate License and joined the firm of Nancy Chandler, who was a family friend since childhood.
The family would like to express deep appreciation to the caring staff of Bay Lake Assisted Living and Memory Care and especially to Kathleen Crayton and Stephanie Paige, her personal caregivers.
A family service will be held in May at Galilee Episcopal Church Columbarium. Memorials may be made to the Galilee Church Pipe Organ Fund, The Alzheimer’s Association, Hope for Life Animal Rescue in Virginia Beach or a charity of one’s choice.
