Carmelo Cruz, known as Carl, age 84, passed away peacefully on December 21, 2024, at his home surrounded by his loving family. Formerly a 40-year resident of Villas, NJ, Mr. Cruz was born on April 28, 1940, in Guayama, Puerto Rico.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Santos and Carmen Cruz; his brother Angelo Ramos; sisters Luz Palmira Ramos and Alicia Ramos; and his son, Carl Cruz.
An avid bike rider, gun enthusiast, and bowler, Mr. Cruz led a life rich in passion and service. He proudly served in the U.S. Navy, the Peace Corps, the Salem County Sheriff’s Department, the Volunteer Fire Department, the Army Reserves, and retired as a Staff Sergeant with the Delaware River and Bay Authority.
He is survived by his devoted wife of 60 years, Lady G. Cruz, and their four daughters: Shirley A. Cruz of Wildwood, NJ; Sharon Cruz (Landron) of Palm Beach, FL; Lady A. Cruz (Good) of Yorktown, VA; and Shila M. Cruz (Treadwell) of Newport News, VA. He is also survived by 18 grandchildren, 23 great-grandchildren, and numerous nieces and nephews.
A private ceremony will be held at a later date in Guayama, Puerto Rico, where his ashes will be spread, in accordance with his wishes.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the DRBAPD FOP, Lodge #14, a group Mr. Cruz was proud to be a member of.
Mr. Cruz will be remembered for his deep love for his family, his lifelong dedication to service, and his zest for life. His legacy will continue to inspire all who knew him.
