Carol Irene (Root) Lewis Purcell
Virginia Beach – Carol I. Purcell, 70, went to be with the Lord on Thursday, May 28, 2015 at 10:20pm. The daughter of the late Howard C. and Winifred A. Root, she was born on July 25, 1944 in Erie, PA, but made her home for the past eighteen months at Atlantic Shores Retirement Community in Virginia Beach, VA. Carol was a 1963 graduate of Lawrence Park High School in Erie and graduated from St. Vincent Hospital’s School of Nursing, also in Erie. For more than twenty years she worked in Erie as a registered nurse and from 1997 to 2013 served in the same capacity at the University of Kentucky’s Pain Management Unit in Lexington, KY until her retirement.
Carol married the late Jack K. Lewis on July 2, 1977 in Kearsarge, Erie, PA and the late Ross A. Purcell on August 26, 2001 in Lexington, KY. She was also pre-deceased by a brother, Howard L. Root in Erie on January 9, 1998.
Survivors include her sisters, Nancy Lou Lewis and her husband Larry, Cedar Rapids, IA; Sara Jane Schauer and her husband George, Virginia Beach; and Donna Mae Christensen and her husband Charles, Harborcreek, PA. She is also survived by sons, Samuel David (Michelle) Jones, Butler, PA; and Michael Paul (Lisa) Lewis, Erie; and grandchildren Allison and Andrea Jones, Butler; Amanda, Rebecca, Jacquelyn, and John Lewis, Erie; and Amber McGrainor, Erie, PA. She is also survived by very dear friends, James and Karen Fawcett, and their children Beth and Jake, Lexington.
A memorial service will be held at the convenience of the family at a date and time to be determined in Lexington. Cremation Society of Virginia of Hampton Roads is assisting the family. Contributions in Carol Purcell’s memory may be made payable to the Cornerstone Bible Class at Immanuel Baptist Church, 3100 Tates Creek Rd. in Lexington, KY 40502 and/or to The Regional Cancer Center, 2500 W. 12th St., Erie, PA 16505.
