Charlie was born October 7, 1956, in Uniondale, Long Island, NY. He grew up in East Meadow, where he played little league, attended Christ The King Episcopal Church, grew his love of baseball, golf, the beach, and music. He loved his champion Yankees and those amazing Mets. He was a catalog of film trivia and could easily quote apropos movie lines for any occasion. He enjoyed a sentimental love for music, especially the Beatles.
After graduating East Meadow HS, he attended Nassau Community College, and SUNY Oneonta. After leaving the Catskills, he lived in Howell, NJ, before moving to Chesapeake, VA, in 1990. He returned to teaching before working as a CNA and then medical auditor for Sentara Hospital, until his retirement 2 years ago.
Charlie was indeed a sunny life force who could offer a calm voice of reason while he made you laugh with his quick wit. He had an amazing spirit and enormous heart that everyone felt in his presence, for which he’ll be fondly remembered. He loved time with family and friends; especially taking his son Matthew on walks down to the water. Those who were fortunate enough to know him, knew they could count on him to show up with an open heart.
Sadly, heart failure took our great Charlie too soon. Two later celebrations of life, one in New Jersey, and one in Virginia, to honor this sweet and dedicated man, will be announced at a later time. Because of his love for his special needs son Matthew, donations can be made to the Ability Center of Virginia in memory of Charles Hartelius.
