Charles “Pat” Patrick, 88, passed away peacefully on April 16, 2026. Born June 12, 1937, in Chicago, Illinois, he was the son of the late Mary Patrick Mitchell and Raymond Patrick.
At 18, Pat joined the U.S. Navy. He served aboard submarine tenders as a skilled draftsman, leaving behind detailed illustrations that his family continues to treasure. His time at sea was marked not only by dedication to his work, but by curiosity, creativity, and some tomfoolery. He often spoke of his adventures in the Pacific, including his time aboard a “banana boat,” and of engineering the perfect kite to fly from the ship’s stern.
After ten years of active duty, Pat continued his graphics career in civil service as an illustrator and photographer while at the same time earning a degree from ODU. Over time, his path evolved into work in human resources, from which he ultimately retired.
A lifelong lover of music, Pat was a self-taught musician who played classical guitar and many brass instruments. He found particular joy in participating in Tuba Christmas. For over 50 years, he was an active member of the Barbershop Harmony Society (SPEBSQSA), singing and competing with the Commodore Chorus and in Four in the Morning and Acclaim! Quartets. He also contributed his expertise as a barbershop stage presence judge for many years.
When he wasn’t working or singing, Pat could often be found behind the wheel of his beloved 1962 Volkswagen Beetle, attending Tidewater Volkswagen Club events, or proudly parading his 1930 Model A with the Cape Henry Model A Club. He was also an avid bowler and a proud member of the 650 Club.
Pat was a devoted member of Ascension Catholic Church for over 40 years, where he served as President of Parish Council, on Confirmation team and many other church ministries .
He is survived by his beloved wife of 62 years, the girl next door, the love of his life, Peggy. They have one daughter, Molly Samuels (Mike), grandson Owen Patrick Samuels, and a loyal Golden Retriever, Millie. He was predeceased by an infant son, David.
Pat will be remembered for the joy he found in music, storytelling, and the friendships he made throughout his life. Whether through a song, a story, or a shared laugh, he left a lasting impression on everyone who knew him.
A private service will be held at Ascension Catholic Church.
