Chris Wayne Smith, born on April 26, 1960, in Beckley, West Virginia, passed away surrounded by his loving family on December 11, 2024. He is survived by his devoted wife of 30 years, Diane Smith, and his cherished children: Thomas (Sheena), Michael (Kelsea), Matthew (Sarah), Mandy (James), Paul “PJ” (Wendy), and Jennifer. He is also survived by four siblings: Patricia, Bertha, Margaret, and Randall, along with many nieces and nephews. Chris was predeceased by his parents, Elbert Clark and Mary Margaret Kathleen, and four siblings: Elbert, Larry, Freddy, and Norma. A proud and loving Pop Pop, Chris deeply cherished his 17 grandchildren, who brought him endless joy and filled his days with laughter.
Chris lived a vibrant and fulfilling life, embracing every moment with passion and a zest for adventure. In his younger years, he found freedom on the open road, riding his motorcycle and enjoying the thrill of the journey. As he embraced fatherhood, he discovered new ways to share his love for adventure with his family. He created countless memories camping under the stars, fishing on peaceful waters, and boating on warm summer days. The mountains of West Virginia, with their natural beauty and serenity, held a special place in his heart, and he treasured every visit.
He dedicated over 30 years of his career to the Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT), where he worked diligently to ensure that the roadways were safe for all travelers. Outside of work and family time, Chris enjoyed watching movies and listening to bluegrass music, finding comfort and joy in these simple pleasures.
Family was at the center of everything Chris did. As their family grew, so did the love that surrounded him. Whether it was a quiet evening or a lively gathering, Chris cherished the time spent with his children and grandchildren, always finding joy in life’s simple pleasures. For those who knew him well, it was clear: no matter the time of day, he could always be found enjoying his favorite signature black coffee alongside a sweet treat.
Chris will be remembered for his adventurous spirit, unwavering dedication to family, and his ability to find joy in life’s little moments. He leaves behind a legacy of love, laughter, and treasured memories that will forever live on in the hearts of those who were fortunate to know him.
