On October 27, 1955, Clarence Greene was born at Fort Eustis Army Base in Newport News, Virginia. He was the sixth of seven children born to Agnes and Joseph Greene. In his early years, Clarence was a Military “Brat’ who was educated in many public school districts. When his father completed his duties in the Army, and was honorably discharged, the family returned to their home state of Newport News, Virginia. Clarence completed his academic studies at Denbigh High School. He continued his educational journey at Norfolk State University in Norfolk, Virginia. He studied music and played in the drum corp. This educational journey developed in Clarence a love for the drums and gospel music.
Clarence then made the decision to enlist in the United States Army. He served his country with dignity and respect. Upon completion of his tour of duty, he was honorably discharged.
Clarence returned to his home state of Newport News, Virginia. It was here that he met and married his one true love the former Regina Elazier. To this union was born three children Barry, Shantelle, and Jesse. Clarence loved his family and was a devoted father, husband and friend. He took pride in providing for all their needs. When he talked about his children he smiled with pride. When he talked about his wife it was with love and adoration. He loved his family!
A passion of Clarence was playing drums. He was a “Beast” on the drums. He loved gospel music and played for various gospel groups and churches in and around the Peninsula and Tidewater areas. Whenever you asked him to play he would be there with his “girlfriends”, as Regina called his drums, in the car.
Clarence never met a stranger. If you had the opportunity to meet him, you were his friend. He loved children especially! He spent a lot of time with them playing with them and listening to their hearts desires. It was this love for children that lead him to his employment with the Newport News Public School System as a Bus Driver. He loved this job! He safely drove children to and from school daily for over 25 years. On November 1, 2015, Clarence retired from his position due to the onset of a chronic illness.
