Claudia McGill Lavin passed peacefully at home in Virginia Beach on March 22, 2026, surrounded by the love of her husband and all eight of their children. She was 79. Though her passing followed a period of illness, her spirit remained strong, gentle and steadfast, ever assured of the promise of eternal life.
Born on January 15, 1947, in Knoxville, Tennessee, Claudia Ann McGill was the beloved daughter of Julia Twardowski McGill and Claude Elliott McGill. She grew up in Greensboro, North Carolina, and was a graduate of Grimsley High School before attending Mount Vernon Seminary and College in Washington, D.C. Raised in a traditional home, she later discovered a radiant, deeply personal faith that became the quiet center of her life. Her love for the Lord was both joyful and gracious, a constant source of encouragement and guidance. She often found solace in the words of Psalm 91, trusting that “He will cover you with His feathers, and under His wings you will find refuge.” Her mother, Julia, played a strong role in shaping Claudia’s deep appreciation for beauty, people and animals, and their close relationship was a model she would pass down to her children.
Claudia met her husband, James Vincent Lavin, Jr., in Washington DC in the 1960s through Operation Match, one of the earliest computer matchmaking programs. Though both participated in the program for fun, much to their surprise the match endured – for over 60 years. Together they merged their southern and Boston roots and built a dynamic family of six sons and two daughters. Motherhood was a calling that Claudia answered fully. She attended nearly every school event, every game, and every horse show up and down the east coast. And despite the incredible busyness of managing 8 kids, she made life fun and full of adventure.
At home, she created a world of love and devotion. With quiet strength and humor, Claudia navigated the demands of a diverse family of 10 – from the typical responsibilities such as managing homework and sports schedules to the more unusual tasks of cleaning stalls and trailering horses. She never took a sick day – declaring that she didn’t have time to be sick – yet she always nurtured, comforted, and advocated for her kids when they needed her. She was a steady source of light for her family, which later extended to her 16 grandchildren (who call her “Dia”). Few things made her happier or prouder than watching her children become parents and her grandchildren thrive.
Claudia had an elegance that you couldn’t help but notice, marked by natural beauty and timeless style. She had an eye for beautiful things around her too, from flowers and landscapes to even simply the perfect shade of blue. She was a passionate artist and could capture the world around her with her talented oil painting. She found joy in her family, her home, and her pets – from dogs, cats, and horses to frogs, ferrets, and guinea pigs.
In her final days, her family gathered close, reading aloud from her well-worn Bible and singing hymns and praise songs that she knew by heart. The peace, faith, and steadfast love that filled the room was truly a reflection of the peace, faith, and steadfast love within her.
Claudia is survived by her husband of nearly 60 years, James Vincent Lavin, Jr., of Virginia Beach; their eight children and sixteen grandchildren: Matthew McGill Lavin (Christie) and children Molly, Jack, and Maddie; James Adam Lavin (Allison) and Zack, Jake, and Jaden; Christian Elliott Lavin (Tracey) and Alexis and Dylan; Lucas Scott Lavin; Parker James Lavin (Lauren) and Virginia, Mac, and Wally; Casey Timothy Lavin (Monica) and Julia; Samantha Julia Alice Candler (Jason) and Colt; and Vanessa Faith Speck (Rob) and Sophie, Ben, and
Daphne.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Julia and Claude McGill, who were certainly waiting for her with open arms in Heaven.
A service celebrating Claudia’s life will be held on Sunday, April 12, at 3:00 p.m. at Galilee Episcopal Church, 3928 Pacific Avenue, Virginia Beach, followed by a reception from 4:00–6:00 p.m. at the family home, 824 Cardinal Road.
