Constance Avery Mix entered the presence of her Lord on June 24, 2023. She was born in Newton, MA to Herbert and Alma Avery. Connie was predeceased by her beloved husband of 67 years, Lewellyn, her parents, and eight of her siblings.  She is survived by her sister Beatrice Dale Benson, her four children, Linda (James) Southerland, William (Lucy) Mix, Larry (Jane Mix), Lucinda (Tim) Melone, fifteen grandchildren, and 26 great-grandchildren.

Connie graduated from the Cornell University School of Agriculture in 1948, married her husband Lew in 1949, and they raised their family in Minnesota and Upstate New York, later retiring to Virginia Beach. She was a devoted wife and loving mother to their four children, investing not only in their formative years, but also continuing her involvement with them and their families, leaving a legacy of spiritual guidance. She was active as a leader in church, school, and community organizations.

When Connie came to know Jesus as her personal Savior, it transformed her life purpose.  She wanted to share this Good News with everyone she could.  She became active in lay witness ministry and shared her story with many others as a speaker for churches and groups like Christian Women’s Club and Women’s Aglow. Connie and Lew loved to host students from around the world in their home and embraced them with warm hospitality and God’s love.

Connie and Lew loved to travel, exploring most of the “Lower 48” states by car with their children.  After their children left the nest, Connie and Lew traveled the world in their retirement, finding opportunities to use their vocational expertise, touching and impacting lives everywhere they went.

She loved nature, gardening, and restoring antique furniture.  Bringing things to their greatest beauty was her utmost joy.  Serving in their home church, Kempsville Presbyterian, was a passion. She was also an avid American patriot. Everyone who knew her will remember her warm smile.

A celebration of life service for Connie will be held at 2pm on July 3, 2023 at Restoration Church at Landstown, 3220 Monet Drive, Virginia Beach. The family would like to extend a huge thank you to the special caregivers who have invested so much in making Mom’s life so meaningful and comfortable in recent years.
