Daniel Jess Atwood “Dan/Buck,” 65, passed away peacefully in his home on January 25, 2024. Dan was born and raised in Washington, Indiana. At age seventeen, Dan joined the U.S. Navy and then retired after twenty-two years active service as a Senior Chief Machinist Mate. He served aboard the USS AINSWORTH (FF-1090), USS CONYNGHAM (DDG-17), USS JOHN KING (DDG-3) and Engineering Training Group, Norfolk. After his Navy career, he worked at Pure Water Technologies, Inc., AMSEC LLC and Auxiliary Systems Inc.

Renowned for his unparalleled expertise in operational and repair aspects of steam ship equipment, Dan dedicated countless nights, collaborating seamlessly with ASI and Navy personnel, ensuring that vessels were prepared for service. His unyielding affection for teammates and sailors, coupled with unwavering dedication, defined his career. After taking a temporary hiatus from ASI, Dan ventured into roles at AMSEC and initiated his own venture, Atwood Auxiliary. Overcoming a battle with cancer, Dan rejoined his ASI family in March 2010, contributing until his semi-retirement in December 2023. Known for his ability to tackle any challenge head-on, Dan was a force to be reckoned with. His unique way of expressing care, alternating between explicit verbal criticism and declarations of love, was emblematic of his character. Dan’s profound knowledge and steadfast commitment to the Maritime Industry, spanning both Navy and Commercial sectors, leave an indelible void. Dan is predeceased by his parents, two brothers and his wife, Winnie. Dan is survived by his loving soulmate of sixteen years, Helen Moran; his brother, Samuel Atwood of Indiana; nieces, nephews, many dear friends, loved ones and his equine friend, Vinnie.
A Celebration of Life has been scheduled for Saturday, February 17th from noon to 4 p.m. at the Columbian Club Inc., 1236 Prosperity Rd., Virginia Beach, VA 23451.
