Danny Dong Ho Theis was born July 28th, 1975, in South Korea (Birth name Yu Dong Ho) age 48 and danced is way into Heaven on January 15th, 2024. He had a distinguished military career that lasted 30 years and retired as a Lieutenant in July 2023.
Danny was adopted by Chuck and Song Suk “Suki” Theis in 1980. He was raised in Colorado Springs, CO, where he grew up on the Air Force Academy where his dad taught. He graduated High School in 1993 and went off to the United States Marine Corp after graduation. After finishing basic and school, he spent 3 years as a Radioman before transitioning from the Marine Corp to the United States Navy in 1996.
Danny spent the early part of his 27-year career with the Navy as an Electricians Mate in the Amphibious Fleet, participating in one Mediterranean deployment on the USS Portland (LSD-37) out of Norfolk, Virginia and two Western Pacific deployments on the USS Ogden (LPD-5) out of San Diego, California.
In 2004, Danny joined the EOD community. He made two combat deployments to Iraq and one MCM deployment to CTF-56 in support of Global War on Terrorism. After advancing to EODC in 2009, Chief Theis transferred to EODTEU-ONE and worked as the LCPO for the Underwater Division. While at EODTEU-ONE, he trained 36 platoons, and developed the TAC-MEMO for SEABOTIX and SEAFOX ROV systems. During his tour EODC Theis applied for the FY-13 LDO commissioning program and was commissioned as an ensign on August 1, 2013, and attended Mustang University.
After completion of LDO training, in Newport, Rhode Island, ENS Theis reported to EODMU-SIX as OIC for PLT 6-1-2 with a successful deployment to East Africa. LT Theis then proceeded to EODMU-TWELVE as Training Officer, where he managed the OFRP for four Naval Special Warfare, two Mine Counter Measure, and four Mobility Platoons. He then reported to EODTEU-ONE, in San Diego, California and served as the N71 in charge of Air Operations, Chemical, Biological, Homemade Explosives, Nuclear Hazards, Mine Counter Measures, and Diving divisions. He later served as the OIC for EODTEU-ONE’s Detachment China Lake.
He enjoyed golfing, riding his Harley, traveling and a good cigar. Hanging out in the backyard with friends and BBQing
Danny was larger than life, when he walked in a room you knew he was there. He had a wicked sense of humor and a smile that made everyone happy to know him.
Danny is survived by his children, Lucia Song, Chase Donovan, their mother Andrea Westervelt, his sisters Kristen Snell (Donny), Karrie Theis (Mike-Brianna-Lyndsay), and his sister/cousin Rachel Wakefield (David-Macy-McKayla), his loving family stateside and in South Korea, and his wife Ieasha Theis and her children
