December 19, 1980 - October 23, 2024

On Wednesday, October 23, 2024 the world lost one of its kindest and most gentle souls. Surrounded by family, Randall David Betz, 43, passed away in Virginia Beach after a short illness. Deeply loved by his family, friends, and neighbors, David always reached out to help people in need. He was a constant, steadfast caretaker for his entire family. A cousin described David as “a gentle bear, always going along with the flow, like you could go up to him and give him a hug.”

David was born on December 19, 1980 in Suffolk, Virginia. He is cherished in memory by his parents Randy Betz and Barbara Mease, his sister Meghan Betz Ashburn and her husband Tremain, nephews David (DJ), Tyimaru (Ty), Dominic, and Julian, many uncles, aunts, and cousins, and godparents Steve and Cheryl Colecchi. A 1999 graduate of Franklin High School, David attended VCU and Longwood University. Many of his art works decorate the walls of his home and the National Institute of Mental Health.

We are pleased to share with you that a date has been confirmed for David’s Celebration of Life. It will be held on Friday, December 13, 2024, beginning at 2 pm at the High Street Methodist Church, 31164 Camp Parkway, Courtland, VA. It will also be available on Facebook Livestream.

More information will follow, but for now know that this will be an informal and casual event, children are welcome, and a reception will follow in the church hall.

David’s ashes will be spread over the Chesapeake Bay that he so loved. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in David’s memory to The Children’s Center, 700 Campbell Avenue, Franklin, VA 23851. The family encourages you to offer your fondest memories of David at www.vacremationsociety.com.

Barb, Randy, and Meghan, I don't even know how to put into words how sorry I am for your loss. David was a beautiful soul. I remember him always creating art...using anything as his canvas, including himself. In school, he would draw on his forearm during class. We would meet up in the hallway between classes and he would flash his arm with a grin to show me his latest drawing. I have too many memories from our teen years to count but one of my favorites was watching the stars with him from the open hatchback of his old green car. He had an appreciation for all things beautiful in this world. His calm slow to anger nature was a reflection of the wonderful family who surrounded him. I feel lucky to have known him. May God bless and comfort your family.

While I never met David before his passing, I want to once again express my condolences to his family and especially his sister Meghan Ashburn, given I'm a good friend of hers. I hope David is greeted with open arms in God's kingdom of Heaven and that hopefully, God, his angels, and fellow deceased souls are celebrating his arrival. To conclude, I wish I knew you David and I hope to possibly learn more about what a great impact you had on this world.

David Betz, one of the coolest guys from Franklin. I remember how kind he always was to me, and quick to make me laugh. Lots of good memories to look back on, and they always put a smile on my face. like that time we took the Cadillac to nags head and didn't know how to get there on the back roads (way before gps existed) but we finally made it after like 4hrs lol. or that time I ran into him at a concert and we hadn't seen each other grown up yet, still just as cool! rest in peace homie, you are missed and loved
