David Wayne Miles, Sr., affectionately known as “Papa Dave,” took his final ride into the sunset on June 5, 2026, at the age of 64.
A native of Indian River, Dave was the kind of man who made an impression the moment he walked into a room. With his towering presence, booming voice, and unmistakable look, he could seem intimidating at first glance. But anyone who knew him quickly discovered the truth: beneath that rough exterior was one of the kindest, most generous souls you could ever meet. He had a heart as big as he was, and he never hesitated to help someone in need, offer a laugh, or make a new friend feel like family.
Dave wore many hats throughout his life, both literally and figuratively. He spent his early years serving his community as a volunteer firefighter and later worked as a longshoreman. No matter where life took him, he carried a strong work ethic, unwavering loyalty, and a genuine concern for others.
A true outdoorsman, Dave loved camping, hunting, and fishing. He was happiest around a campfire, on the water, in the woods, or riding his beloved motorcycles down an open road. Adventure was always calling, and he was usually the first one to answer.
As a proud member of Berkley Lodge #167 AF&AM, Dave valued brotherhood, friendship, and community. He had a gift for bringing people together. His porch, garage, campsite, or favorite gathering spot often became a place where stories were shared, laughter echoed, and everyone felt welcome. He never met a stranger, only friends he hadn’t gotten to know yet.
More than anything, Dave will be remembered for his larger-than-life personality, his laugh, his willingness to help anyone, and the way he made people feel seen, welcomed, and appreciated. He inspired others simply by being himself—authentic, loyal, hardworking, and full of love.
David is preceded in death by his beloved parents, Joseph Dudley Miles, Jr. and Alma Nolan Miles; his brother, Alan Miles; nephew, James English; niece, Melanie Thurman; and sister-in-law, Michele Oudin.
He leaves behind his son, David Miles Jr. and Stephanie Cox; his daughter, Sarah Miles and David Greene; and his cherished granddaughter, Sydney Greene, and siblings; Dudley Miles, Judy Miles, Kathy & Jerry Stallings, as well as countless friends and extended family members who he loved dearly.
Services for Papa Dave will be private, just as he would have wanted. Rather than making a fuss, he’d probably prefer that you raise a cold one, share a story, take a ride, or spend time with the people you love.
In the immortal words of Papa Dave:
“Much Love All.”
