Dennis had a zest for living and he never met a stranger. He had an engaging smile that lit up a room and relayed the warmth, honesty and sincerity that resided within him. Among his many accomplishments in life, he was a devoted husband of 57 years, loving father, son, brother, uncle, grandfather, great-grandfather and an integral part of the Providence Presbyterian Church congregation and community. While in the U.S. Navy, Dennis proudly served his country aboard the Destroyer Frank Knox during the Korean Conflict. Later he served in the U.S. Coast Guard, retiring as a Senior Chief Quartermaster. He was the proud recipient of the Coast Guard Achievement Medal. Dennis was a devoted family man who ensured his family received rich experiences in life while stationed in many places throughout the country. With an internal compass that never failed, Dennis navigated the roads and seas of life with an open and generous spirit. Those who knew him will never forget how Dennis touched their lives. He will be missed but never forgotten. Left to cherish his memory are his loving wife, Pauline D Stanberry; two daughters, Denise Jacobs and husband David of Bogalusa, LA; Allyson Garcelon and husband Stephen of Merrimack, N.H.; and one son, Kevin Stanberry and wife Charlotte of Virginia Beach, VA; two grandchildren; Benjamin Stanberry, Jennifer Wade and husband Ron of Lafayette, LA; three great-grandchildren, Allyson, Aiden, and Jude of Lafayette, LA. His sister, Patricia Mears of Flowery Branch, GA; brother, Ward Stanberry of Katy, TX. A memorial service will be held on Friday, May 11, 2012 at 2 p.m. at Providence Presbyterian Church; 5497 Providence Rd, Virginia Beach, VA 23464; reception to follow in the fellowship hall. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Providence Presbyterian Church or the Salvation Army. Cremation Society of Virginia is handling the arrangements.
