Derrick Lamont Canady went peacefully to meet his Lord and Savior on October 31, 2023 after a fatal car crash. He was born in Newark, NJ on August 3, 1966 to Melvin Leon and Dorothy S. Canady. He had one beloved son, Derrick L. Canady II; one younger brother, Steven L. Canady; and a former wife, Tracey Canady. Derrick was well known as a “people person”. His warm, outgoing smile and compassion were experienced by many.
Derrick was educated in the Newark, NJ school system. He later graduated from Grambling State University with a Bachelor of Science in business. He began his teaching experience in the Virginia Beach school system 20 years ago. During this time, he worked as a special education teacher, a coach, and he taught adapted physical education for the special needs program. He found fulfillment in his work with young students while furthering his own education. Derrick earned a Bachelor of Arts in special education at Old Dominion University. Music was another passion throughout Derrick’s life. He expressed this passion and love through performances with his band, as well as performing solo on guitar and vocals.
Derrick was predeceased by his father. Left to cherish his memory are his mother, his son, his brother, and three step-sisters, as well as aunts, uncles, loving cousins, a large extended family, and many close friends and neighbors.
In one of his last conversations, Derrick said, “I’m at peace.” He was a beautiful soul who will be loved and missed by many.
In a final selfless act, Derrick was able to give the gift of life as he had always desired.
