Dolores Blackman Dougherty passed away Friday, October 21st at Sentara Leigh Memorial Hospital surrounded by her loving family. She was the daughter of William L. and Rose G. Blackman of Hamburg, New York. She graduated from Hamburg High School and attended the University of Buffalo. She married her high school sweetheart James M. Dougherty on November 12th, 1955. She was a Navy wife for twenty-two years and raised three children.
Dolores was a docent for the Chrysler Museum of Art after working at Willis Wayside for several years. She loved history, culture, the arts, and music. She also loved her birds, especially bluebirds. She was a lifelong member of the Catholic Church and a ten year member of St. Gregory the Great.
Survivors include her loving and devoted husband of 61 years, James M. Dougherty, son Robert W. Dougherty and wife Donna of Portsmouth, daughter Anne D. Maher and husband Herb of Virginia Beach, and son Richard A. Dougherty and wife Catherine of Virginia Beach as well as her many loving grand and great-grandchildren and numerous wonderful extended family and friends. She was well-loved and will be dearly missed.
A funeral mass for the celebration of Dolores’s life is scheduled for 10 am on Saturday, October 29th, 2016 at St. Gregory the Great Catholic Church in Virginia Beach with a reception to follow at the Dougherty residence. In lieu of flowers, please make a donation to your favorite charity. Her cremains are to be placed in a columbarium at the Albert G. Horton Jr. Memorial Veterans Cemetery at a future date.
