Dwight Douglas Gibson “Gibby”, 65, of Chesapeake passed away April 2, 2016 after a long courageous battle with heart disease. Though he had the heart of a lamb, he fought like a lion. A devoted person always in the service of others. Dwight started his life in the military, after which he returned to the community and began working in the Norfolk Police Department. He was then given an opportunity and switched careers to firefighting. Gibby began his firefighting career with the Chesapeake Fire Department, then moved on to Fort Story, where he retired.
Left to cherish his memory are his loving wife of 43 years Ruth Gibson; four children, Natalie, Marc, Ryan and Jacob; seven grandchildren ages 21 to 6 months, and several other “children” he loved and cared for as his own. He was a great man known for his sense of humor and quick wit. He was always considered to be the “life of the party”. He leaves behind a tremendous legacy and will be missed dearly by all who loved and knew him. Until we meet again “snapper head”.
Our mom and dad were the neighborhood “parents”. Any child who needed someone to talk to, or hang out with, or was troubled or abused, they would take the children in to their home as if they were their own. Even though mom and dad had four of their own, they were parents to all children in need. Always helping where they could. I guess you can say that we were blessed with over a dozen “siblings” growing up.
Dwight had been sick for over 10 years and our mom Ruth has been sick for about 2 years now. We, the children, are asking if at all, a little help. Now that dad has passed on, we are doing our best to keep our mother, Ruth, comfortable as she battles her illness. We are coming together to pay all the medical expenses that were left from dad and for mom as well as keeping a roof over her head with the mortgage.
Cremation Society of Virginia has helped us to assist with dad’s cremation. Please feel free to visit the Treasured Memories Charitable Funding link below to donate:
