Eleanor Wong Carroll, beloved mother, MomMom, and Wai Po, passed away peacefully on Monday, June 3, 2024, at her home in Virginia Beach, VA with family holding her hand.
She was born on August 13, 1928, in Baltimore, MD to Gin Wong and Lillie Lie Yat and was the eighth of nine children. Eleanor was a graduate of Western High School in Baltimore, MD and studied at Johns Hopkins where she received a certificate in Radiography and then worked as an X-Ray Technician. On November 23, 1952, she married Charles Lee Carroll in San Francisco, CA. As a military wife, Eleanor raised their four children while moving from coast to coast. Chuck’s Navy career took them from California to New Jersey before finally settling in Virginia Beach, VA where Eleanor resided for the past 56 years.
In their younger years, the couple enjoyed going to dinner buffets, movie matinees, and yard sales. Eleanor loved reading, crossword puzzles, Jeopardy, ice cream, and most of all, her large family.
Eleanor was preceded in death by her husband, Charles; her daughter, Deborah “Debbie” Crist; her parents; and two brothers and four sisters.
She is survived by her son Charles Carroll and daughter-in-law Judy of Media, PA; son-in-law Michael Crist of Indian Land, SC; daughter Diane Hunter and son-in-law Tony Hunter of Charlotte, NC; son John Carroll and daughter-in-law Rhoda Carroll of Virginia Beach, VA; nine grandchildren – Charlie and Judy’s children, Michelle Carroll, Lisa (Carroll) Saunders, Allison (Carroll) Gunn, and Kayla Carroll-Ryan; Debbie and Mike’s children, Alexandria “Andi” Delfino and Brandon Crist; Diane and Tony’s daughters, Hila (Hunter) Johnson and Ashley (Hunter) Benton; and John and Rhoda’s son, Quinlan Carroll; 12 great-grandchildren – Devin and Dylan Delfino; Ava and Everly Johnson; Sawyer and Grady Saunders; Bellamy Benton; Jackson, Benjamin, and Samuel Crist; and Frank and Maggie Gunn; and two brothers – Donald Wong of Vacaville, CA and Robert Wong of Baltimore, MD.
There will be a private graveside service on Monday, July 1, 2024, at Hampton National Cemetery.
The family would like to thank the staff at Harmony at Independence for the great care and kindness they provided to Eleanor.
She will be missed and loved forever with her memory living on in our hearts.
