Elizabeth (Betty) Zalewski – best known as MomZ, passed away peacefully in her sleep on June 22, 2021. She is survived by her 4 children and 7 grandchildren, her sister, Helen Morey and brother, Carl Pfeiffer. Elizabeth now rests in eternity with her husband Robert, and her sister Marie (Heidman) and brothers Ray and Robert.
Daughter Robyn and partner Natalie, had the joy of sharing Elizabeth’s last year with her in Virginia Beach. Her oldest son, Jef and wife Cindy have the youngest grandchildren – Timothy, Sarah, and Rebecca. Son Dan and wife Christina have the oldest grandchildren – Erin and Jacob. Youngest son Chris and wife Christine have GrandmaZ’s young adult granddaughters – Maddie and Katie.
Elizabeth was born in Oshkosh, Wisconsin to Lydia (Raddatz) and John Pfeiffer. Elizabeth earned her nursing degree at Mercy Medical College and then moved to Baltimore, MD where she was a nurse anesthetist at Johns Hopkins Hospital. During this time, she met Robert John Zalewski (from Milwaukee, Wisconsin) and they wed in September 1962.
Robert and Elizabeth bought a home and raised their family in Bowie, Maryland, where MomZ lived until January 2020. MomZ was both the school nurse and an art teacher for St. Pius X Elementary School. She was an active member at St. Matthew’s United Methodist Church, where she sang in the choir, was a member of the bell choir, active with the Altar Guild, and a “forever” member of the Angel Gang. One of her very favorite pastimes was playing bridge, which she did up until the age of 89.
MomZ was known for her faith, her joy that she shared freely, and for her contagious laugh and smile. She made and kept many friendships over her 90 years and was undeniably… “The Best Mom Ever!”
Elizabeth’s children are planning a memorial service on Saturday, October 16th with a reception immediately following in Oshkosh, Wisconsin. Please contact a family member for more information. Donations can be made in Elizabeth’s honor to the Hospice Foundation of America.
