Essie Margaret Martin, age 83, passed away at home on Mother’s Day, Sunday, May 14, 2017 after a long battle with Parkinson’s disease. She was preceded in death by her husband, Russell Irving Martin, and her infant great-grandson, Daniel Clayton Riddle. She is survived by her daughter, Vickie Riddle, and her grandchildren, Kyle Riddle and Megan Davis (husband, CW Davis). Essie is also survived by her five great-grandchildren – Kyle’s son, Sebastian Spivey, and Megan’s children, Levi Davis, Cruz Davis, Calleigh Davis, and Gabriella Davis.
Essie, affectionately known as “G” to her family, had a vivacious love of life and treasured her close relationships with her daughter, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. Her sense of humor, sparkling blue eyes, dimples, and amazing talent for Southern cooking drew people to her like a magnet. To know her was to love her. In her younger years, she was known for the beautiful cakes she decorated, her energy and enthusiasm for Jazzercise, and her love of gardening, nature, and animals. Essie held a very special place in her heart for children and was known to help children in various capacities throughout her life. She lived in the same home as her daughter, Vickie, and enjoyed the title of “second mom” to her grandchildren, Kyle and Megan. Her daughter, Vickie, worked faithfully as her caregiver at home, providing the much needed love and support to her mother as her Parkinson’s disease progressed. Special family friend, John Hull, also provided much companionship and care.
In keeping her spirit and legacy alive, we ask that you please take a moment to appreciate the beauty and love around you, just as G did. Whether it’s a hummingbird buzzing around your yard, a young child’s laughter, or a picturesque sunset, please pause to appreciate the beauty and love that we are surrounded by. Treat each other kindly, extend grace and patience to those around you, and always be grateful. Donations for her memorial are graciously welcomed and are being accepted by Cremation Society of Virginia in Newport News, VA. 7415 River Road. Newport News, VA 23607 (757) 245-1525.
