Evelyn Elaine Galbreath 1937-2021
The world lost a beloved mother, wife, and friend, Evelyn Elaine Galbreath, on January 31, 2021. Before her passing, she inspired her friends, family, and caregivers.
Elaine’s dry sense of humor and wit, and her willingness to help friends with her sage, and sometimes withering advice, endeared her to many. She charmed people throughout her life and had many lifelong friendships she enjoyed. She was proud of being a charter member of New Town United Methodist Church.
Her family was her heart and dearest treasures. She is survived by her husband, Davis “Gabby” Galbreath; her daughter, Lorrainna; her son, John; her stepdaughters, Tracy, Nina, Margot and Darlene; and her grandchildren and great grandchildren.
This poem was read at Elaine’s mother’s memorial service, and because Elaine liked symmetry, we are sharing it here.
Do not stand at my grave and weep
I am not there. I do not sleep.
I am a thousand winds that blow.
I am the diamond glints on snow.
I am the sunlight on ripened grain.
I am the gentle autumn rain.
When you awaken in the morning’s hush
I am the swift uplifting rush
Of quiet birds in circled flight.
I am the soft stars that shine at night.
Do not stand at my grave and weep.
I am not there; I do not sleep.
Slightly altered version, original by Mary Elizabeth Frye
Go with God dear one, you will be greatly missed.
