Everett B. Jones – Norfolk
Everett Barrett Jones, 85, died July 7, 2010, in DePaul Hospital.
He was born to Josephine Barrett Jones and Raymond Clifford Jones in Charleston, SC, on January 8, 1925. He grew up in Elizabeth City, NC, where he met and married his wife of 61 years, Gene Harris Jones.
He is survived by his wife and four sons: Everett Barrett Jones, Jr., of Claremont, VA, Dr. Frank Daniels Jones and his wife, Judith Cleveland Jones of Charlottesville, VA, Jeffrey Rollins Jones and his wife, Teresa Guy Jones, of Wilmington, NC, and Dr. Jeremy Bruce Jones, and his wife, Cynthia Elizabeth Jones of Norfolk, VA. Also surviving are ten grandchildren and three great grandchildren.
A graduate of NC State University in Raleigh NC, he retired from the Naval Safety Center as Fire Protection Engineer and was highly regarded as an authority in his field. He also served in that capacity at Fifth Naval District Headquarters and in the Caribbean Area Headquarters in San Juan, Puerto Rico.
A World War II veteran, he served in the US Navy for the duration and was a survivor of the D-Day Invasion. His landing craft LST carried troops ashore at Omaha Beach.
His greatest joy was his family, of which he was inordinately proud. He truly cherished his friends and neighbors.
A very modest man, he wanted no ostentation in life or in death. His eulogy will be in the memories held by those who loved him.
A memorial service will be held at 1:00 in the afternoon of Saturday, July 10th, at the Ocean View Presbyterian Church. In lieu of flowers, you may make a donation to your charity of choice.
