Virginia Beach ~ Florence W. Chandler died Saturday, September 15, 2018, surrounded by family. She leaves three children, George W. Chandler III, Elizabeth C. Vanderwilt, and William W. Chandler, eight grandchildren, and 11 great grandchildren. Her husband George W. Chandler Jr. pre-deceased her by 25 years.
Florence was a resident of Virginia Beach for the past 60 years. She attended Mary Washington College, but graduated from the Norfolk division of William and Mary with a Master’s Degree in Library Science. Florence retired from the Virginia Beach City Public School system after 30 years of service. she taught, was the principal of Shelton Park Elementary School, and for the last 15 years was the Coordinator of School Library Services. Florence participated in various clubs and organizations, among them the Princess Anne Garden Club, Friends of the Virginia Beach Public Library Board, lifetime member of the Virginia Library Association and PTA, Delta Kappa Gamma-Alpha Rho Chapter, the Witchduck Circle of the Kings Daughters, was a former docent at Lynnhaven House and Upper Wolfsnare, and at one time active in the Virginia Beach Historical Society.
A memorial service will be held at Old Donation Episcopal Church, 4449 N. Witchduck Road, Virginia Beach, on Saturday, October 13, 2018 at 1:00 p.m. A burial will take place at a later date in the Arlington National Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Old Donation Episcopal Church.
