Chesapeake – Frederick J. “Jim” Sheipe Sr. of Chesapeake, VA, passed away peacefully surrounded by family and friends on June 3, 2017.
Jim is predeceased by his parents, LCDR Quintin M. Sheipe and Ruth Z. Sheipe; and his sister Susan S. Bertram.
He is survived by his loving wife of 45 years, Barbara Crump Sheipe; his brother Robert J. Sheipe and his wife Michele of Carmel, IN; two sons Frederick J. Sheipe Jr. and his fiancée Andrea L. Pease of Virginia Beach, VA, and Matthew R. Sheipe and his wife Emily of Chesapeake, VA; six grandchildren Chandler M. Sheipe, Evelyn Fynn Sheipe, Joseph C. Pease, Devin R. Sheipe, Ella F. Ackerman, and Paul Harris Sheipe; along with four nieces and six nephews.
Jim was born on March 11, 1952, in Pottsville, PA. At the age of 5 years, his father’s military service brought the family to Norfolk, Virginia. After graduating in 1970, from Norview High School he attended Chesapeake College in Chesapeake, VA where he met the love of his life. Upon leaving school, he accepted a position with Chrysler Credit Corporation as a Collection Agent where he quickly became a valued asset. Shortly thereafter, he accepted a position with United Virginia Bank in Norfolk, VA, as a Unit Manager in Loan Collections. He rose rapidly, becoming a Loan Approval Manager, then moved to the retail area of the bank where he became Branch Manager of an office in South Norfolk. Years later Jim left the retail area becoming, as a mentor and colleague described, “A major player in Loan Loss Recovery during the major recession”. He would eventually fully manage Loan Loss Recovery for SunTrust’s Eastern Region. Through the years his tenacious style served him well, culminating at his retirement in 2009 as Senior Vice President/Credit Administration of SunTrust Bank with 38 years of distinguished service.
Jim’s family, especially his grandchildren, was extremely important to him and their accomplishments were a tremendous source of pride. His mentorship was sought by many and he gave of himself freely, while asking nothing in return. A lifelong sportsman, his passions for travel, hunting and fishing were shared generously and created memories that will be enjoyed for years to come. Jim’s family bears witness and his many friends give testimony to the lives he touched; he will be greatly missed and never forgotten.
In accordance with his wishes, a small memorial service will be held on June 17, 2017, at 4:00 pm at Great Bridge United Methodist Church, 201 Stadium Drive, Chesapeake, VA. Directly following the service, the family invites those in attendance to a Celebration of Life reception from 5 to 9 pm to share stories and memories of Jim.
