Gary Steven Coggin, 68, of Virginia Beach, went home peacefully on May 22, 2026, with his family by his side. He was born on June 12, 1957, in Honolulu, Hawaii to the late E. Diane and Max Coggin.
Gary dedicated 34 years of his life to serving as a firefighter for the City of Norfolk, retiring with honor and respect from his colleagues and community. He returned to the City of Norfolk, briefly, as a Fire Inspector and was also actively involved with the Norfolk Retired Firefighters Association. His commitment to public service was a hallmark of his long and distinguished career.
Gary was a longtime member of Thalia Lynn Baptist Church, serving as a deacon and as a member of numerous committees throughout the years. Gary’s voice was a source of joy, singing in the church choir and performing solos. Christmas Eve services will not be the same without his annual rendition of “O Holy Night.” Congregants remember his big, bear hugs and his special recipe for sausage balls that would draw crowds to the church office for a sample.
His love of music extended beyond the church, where his remarkable voice was heard singing the National Anthem at Norfolk Tides baseball games and at the Richmond Speedway. His performances were cherished by many, leaving a lasting impression on all who had the privilege of hearing him sing.
Whether tinkering around in his garage, building model cars, playing Santa or mowing the grass on his beloved John Deere mower, Gary found joy in life’s simple pleasures.
Gary is survived by his wife, Holly J. Coggin; his children, Sara Coggin McCormick (Mitchell), and Andrew Coggin (Raven Watkins); his cherished grandson, Jaxx Coggin; his sisters, Marilyn Froehler and Andrea Donnelly (Dave); and many extended relatives and friends who will miss him dearly.
A private memorial service will be held at Woodlawn Memorial Gardens in Norfolk. A Celebration of Life Reception will be held at 12:00 p.m. on June 13, 2026 for family and friends at Thalia Lynn Baptist Church located at 4392 Virginia Beach Boulevard in Virginia Beach.
