Genise Adams, 61 of Virginia Beach, died peacefully March 16th, surrounded by her loved ones in the hospital after her second battle with cancer.
Genise was born September 21, 1953 in Miami, Florida, the daughter of Albert and Lou Thurman. She had a flair for the dramatic and thoroughly enjoyed showcasing her talents on stage, at church and at karaoke. She was gifted in creating crafts and loved to crochet and cross stitch. Often her pieces were gifted to friends and family. She was an avid reader and could often be found with any number of library books on her. One of her biggest joys was coordinating family get togethers.
Genise proudly served her country from 1975 to 2004, in both Active Duty and Reserves in the United States Navy. She retired in 2004 as a Petty Officer 1st Class. After retirement she put her people skills and superb organization skills to support Landstown high school as a guidance Data Technician. She worked there until the very end.
Genise is survived by her husband, Walton (Buddy), their four daughters Christi, Dawn, Kelly and Nyna; six grandchildren, her mother Lou Thurman, sisters Mimi and Suzi, various sons-in-law, great nieces and nephews, close friends and colleagues.
In addition to raising four lovely daughters, she was an incredibly active member at Community United Methodist Church. Her many roles there included adult choir, cherub choir, adult hand bells, youth hand bells, Actin’ in His Name theatre group and any other volunteer opportunity she saw fit.
She joins her father Albert Thurman, Aunt, grandparents in heaven. She was not a lover of plants, nor had her thumb ever been green, often known to kill healthy plants, so in lieu of flowers, donations can be sent in her name to Community United Methodist Church Choir fund or Cancer Care Foundation of Tidewater.
There will be a public memorial service of Remembrance and Music for her on Sunday, March 29th at 6:00 PM in the CUMC sanctuary. Please join us to celebrate Genise’s life.
