Gladys Gwaltney Smith, 92, transitioned to her heavenly home on July 14, 2023. Gladys was a native of Newport News and a proud graduate of Newport News High School. She was preceded in death by her parents, Lonual and Lucille Gwaltney: and her daughter, Susan S. Blevins.
She retired from the Federal Government after thirty-nine years, and worked another eleven years at Jefferson Lab. She resided over sixty years in Poquoson raising her five children, who were the light of her life.
Left to cherish her memory is her brother, Robert E. Gwaltney, of Hawaii; three sons, Ronnie, Mark, and David Smith (Debbie); one daughter, Becky Parker (Richard); six grandchildren: Amelinda, Brian, Scott, Ashley, Aprill, and Shelby; 10 great-grandchildren: Cogien, Nova, Dylan, Audrey, Quinn, Luke, Addeline, Skye, Abby, and Liem.
She was a devoted Mother to her children and grandchildren. She will be remembered for her love of family, her strength, faith, silliness, laughter, and love of life. She always told us: “I loved you first,” and we responded: “but we love you more.”
Celebration of Life will be private with family. Donations in her memory can be made to any children’s charity because she loved giving to the children. We will cherish the memories till we meet again.
In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to St. Jude’s in Gladys’ honor. https://www.tmcfunding.com/funds/gladys-gwaltney-smith/8186/
