Gladys Doxey passed away on 11/6/2024 in the comfort of her home with her husband, sister, and daughter by her side. She was born on 5/25/1953 in Chattanooga, Tennessee to William and Jerolyn Martin. As a child of a retired Army Colonel, she had the adventures of living in various places such as Germany, Alaska, and Virginia, where she eventually settled. Gladys graduated from Thomas Edison High School in Alexandria, VA and then earned her degree in Interior Design from The Art Institute of Atlanta.
Gladys is predeceased by her parents. She was blessed with one daughter, Jennifer Bachsmith Stell (Alan Stell) of Chesapeake; sister, Mary Smith of Annapolis, MD; and brother, William Martin III (Debbie) of Destin, FL. Nearly 28 years ago, Gladys married the love of her life, John Lloyd Doxey III. In marrying John, Gladys embraced her “bonus” daughters Paula Doxey (Ben Day), Joan Woodle (Jason), and Katherine Neilsen (Keith). She was blessed with grandchildren Caitlyn, Lauren, Hailey, Parker, Conner, Quinlin, and Ruby; nieces and nephew Billy, Christine, Samantha and Michelle.
Gladys spent the majority of her career in Senior Living interior design. Approximately 20 years ago, Gladys ventured out on her own designing modern interiors for local hospitals, funeral homes, nursing homes, and assisted living communities. From blueprints to finished product, she would work her magic and use her incredible gift to create beautiful communities for our seniors.
Her greatest joy was spending time with her family, trips to Atlantic City with her husband, Spring Break trips with her granddaughters, her beloved Dachshunds, computer games, selfies, and being a friend to everyone.
Gladys made her family promise to not hold a funeral as she did not want anyone mourning over her. In the spirit of Gladys, a celebration of her life will be held at a later date. She would want us all to eat good food, dance our tails off, raise a glass (preferably a vodka and oj), and celebrate life!
In lieu of flowers, she would want donations to be given to a charity of your choice, the American Cancer Society, or the Alzheimer’s Association. Condolences may be left for the family at www.vacremationsociety.com
