Harold “Hank” Bernard Loyer was a loving husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, uncle, great uncle and Marine. Hank passed peacefully in his home in Virginia Beach on September 8, 2023.
He was born to Daniel Wayne and Margaret (Westmyer) Loyer on May 13, 1929 in Mingo Junction, Ohio. As a Marine Hank served in battles all over the world for 33 years. Retired as Sargent Major-Master Sargent. He loved every minute of his service.
When Hank wasn’t fighting he was building from log cabins to bird houses Hank always had a project and would invent tools to make the projects happen.
He is survived by his children Harold Bernard Loyer, Jr. (Penelope), David Loyer (Shirlene), Daniel Loyer (Teresa), Thor Loyer, Joseph Loyer (Cherise), and Francis Loyer (Holly), Balinda Schmidt (Paul); Calista Epstein (Mark) Loving wife of 14 years Carol Loyer. Step daughter Lara Mortimer (Leon). Grand-children, Erick, Michael, Stephanie (Warren), Joey, Sammy, Calista, Kristie, Madison, Anthony, and especially spoiled granddaughter Frances Loyer (Joshua), who Hank and Ethel raised in their retirement; and twelve exceptional great-grandchildren. A host of loving nephews, nieces and friends.
Hank was predeceased by his parents; his siblings Henry , Callista, Francis, and Daniel; and his wife of 47 years, Ethel Louise Loyer.
A remembrance celebration of life will be held on Saturday, September 30, at 11am at Haygood United Methodist Church, 4713 Haygood Rd, Virginia Beach, VA 23455. Reception to follow .
In lieu of flowers, the family has requested that remembrances be made in the form of contributions to the Haygood United Methodist Church or The Marine Toys for Tots Foundation.
