Harriett Gardner Hausman Cunningham, born April 15, 1922, passed away peacefully on Monday, January 17, 2011. She was born in St. Louis, Missouri, and attended Washington University, lived in Portsmouth, Virginia; Midland, Michigan; Lake Jackson, Texas; Concepcion, Chile, and returned to Virginia in 1983. She was predeceased by her husband Robert Waller Cunningham in 2003 and her daughter Carol Waller Cunningham Dowling in 2010. She is survived by her sister Janet Hausman Belt of St. Louis, Missouri; three daughters: Marian Cunningham Watts and Kaighin of San Antonio, Texas; Lucy Cunningham Lee and Ned of Virginia Beach, Virginia; and Joan Cunningham Kessler and Gary of Dallas, Texas; son in law Patrick Dowling of San Antonio, Texas; five grandchildren: Kathryn Stanitz, James Watts and Anita of San Antonio, Texas; Robert Watts and Stephanie of Dallas, Texas; Jay Lee of Virginia Beach, Virginia and Sam Kessler of Dallas, Texas; and seven great grandchildren: Olivia, Sophie, Abby , Christopher; Macy, Keegan, and Lauren.
Harriett, often called Tudy by loved ones, attended Galilee Episcopal Church where she was a founding member of the Prayer Shawl Ministry and a member of the Bishop Gunn Circle. She was a member of the National Society of the Colonial Dames of America in the Commonwealth of Virginia and spent many years volunteering at Sentara Virginia Beach General on the flower guild for patients. The highlight of her life was raising her four “only daughters” with unconditional love.
The family wishes to extend many thanks to the staff of Sentara Virginia Beach General Hospital stroke unit for their heartfelt care.
A memorial service will be held on Friday, January 21 at Galilee Episcopal Church at 11:00 am. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Galilee Columbarium, Colonial Dames Wilton House in Richmond, the stroke unit at Sentara Virginia Beach General Hospital or the charity of your choice.
