Helen Lois McCann Waid of Virginia Beach passed away peacefully at the Waterford Living Center on May 15, 2016.
A native of Roanoke, Va., she was born on Sept. 4, 1925, one of five children born to the late Charles and Helen McCann of Roanoke.
She was married to the late Lt. Col. Lewis C. Waid, USA (ret.) of Roanoke and after his retirement they resided in Virginia Beach, where she earned Bachelors and Masters degrees in Education from Old Dominion University. She became an English teacher at Princess Anne High School in Virginia Beach and later advanced to assistant director of the English Curriculum for the Virginia Beach secondary schools. She retired after more than 20 years of service.
She is survived by her sister Betty Marie Hutton and her brother Roy Sherman McCann of Roanoke; sons Steve Waid and wife Margaret of Charlotte, N.C., and Dr. L. Randolph Waid and wife Debby of Mt. Pleasant, S.C.; three grandchildren, Ann Celeste Waid of Asheville, N.C., Stephen Andrew Waid of Los Angeles, and Janet Straughn Forrest of Clayton, Del.; and two great-grandchildren, Breanne and Kyle Blair.
A celebration of her life will be held on Saturday, June 11 at 1pm. at Altmeyer Funeral Home, 5792 Greenwich Road in Virginia Beach. Arrangements are being handled by Cremation Society of VA (757)474-9409.
