On Wednesday, May 19, 2021, Helen Wozniak, loving wife, mother, and grandmother passed away at the age of 78. Helen was born on May 10, 1943 in Norfolk, VA to William and Dorothy Whitehead. She graduated in 1965 from University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill with a degree in Sociology. While working for the Red Cross in 1969, she was stationed at hospitals in Da Nang and Qui Nhon, Vietnam, helping soldiers with various issues as a social worker. In 1972, she married Frank Walter Wozniak. They raised two sons, William and Frank. She ran Batchelder & Collins, Inc., a local masonry distributor based in Norfolk, VA for close to 30 years with her husband. Helen was very proud of the company’s 153 year history, as she was the great granddaughter of its founder, Captain William Collins. She most enjoyed working with customers in the showroom.
Helen will be most remembered for her kind heart and genuine nature. She had a way of ingratiating herself to anyone she spoke to by giving them her undivided attention and truly caring about what they had to say. She was happiest surrounded by friends, family, and dogs. She loved watching and feeding birds at her Suffolk home. She also enjoyed feeding fish in her koi pond. She was an avid UNC basketball fan. Over the years, she and her husband had all types of dogs. She was most fond of their many Tibetan Mastiffs, especially, Jetska and her loyal Chase, who stayed at her bedside until the very end.
Helen was predeceased by her father, William, her mother, Dorothy, and sister, Dorothy Marie Campbell. She is survived by her husband of 49 years, Frank, her two sons, William(Grace), Frank(Melissa), granddaughter Sophia, and two step granddaughters, Eleni and Audrey. The family will hold a celebration of Helen’s life in the coming weeks. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that a donation be made to the American Cancer Society in Helen’s name.
