Henry Clay Hudson, affectionately known as “Clay,” passed away peacefully on June 22, 2026, in Hampton, Virginia, at the age of 92. Born on February 8, 1934, in Duncan, Oklahoma, Clay lived a life marked by faith, generosity, and a deep love for the outdoors.
Clay’s early years were spent on his family’s peanut farm, where he developed a lifelong appreciation for nature and hard work. He pursued higher education at Virginia Tech, earning a Bachelor’s Degree that would serve as the foundation for his diverse career. In his twenties, Clay worked as a soil specialist, a role that allowed him to combine his passion for the land with his professional endeavors. He later became a successful business owner in the construction industry, a testament to his entrepreneurial spirit and dedication.
Despite his varied career, Clay found his true calling in ministry. For decades, he served as a Pastor to numerous congregations, sharing his faith and compassion with all who crossed his path. As a member and Pastor at Grace Fellowship Church since 1974 and over 20 years total, and previously an elder at New Covenant Church in Hampton, Clay touched countless lives with his sermons and pastoral care.
Clay’s missionary work took him around the globe, including a significant period of 12 years living in Romania. His efforts in starting churches worldwide and his extensive travels reflected his commitment to spreading the gospel of Jesus. An avid outdoorsman, Clay cherished the mountains, sunrises, and the simple joys of gardening, hunting, and fishing. His love for animals was evident in his unique choice of pets, including a skunk.
A man of remarkable generosity, Clay was known for his hospitality and kindness. He often ensured that others had what they needed, whether it was a warm blanket or a cool drink of water. Despite suffering a permanent injury from an accident, Clay’s resilience and positive outlook remained unwavering.
Clay was preceded in death by his beloved parents, Robert and Gertrude Getty Hudson, his brother, and his grandson, Kevin Hudson. He is survived by his devoted wife of nearly 70 years, Dare Hudson, and their seven children: Robert Hudson, Steve Hudson, Tim Hudson, John Hudson, Joy Stone, Becky Huning, and James Hudson. His legacy continues through his 19 grandchildren and 25 great-grandchildren, with two more on the way, as well as a host of cherished friends across the world.
A memorial service will be held at a later date at Grace Fellowship Church. Given Clay’s extensive network of friends and loved ones, the church may not be large enough to accommodate all who wish to pay their respects. In lieu of flowers and in memory of Clay, donations can be made to his devoted church, Grace Fellowship.
In remembering Clay, we celebrate a life well-lived, filled with love, service, and an unwavering faith in the goodness of humanity. His memory will forever be a blessing to those who knew him.
