Henry "Stuart" Buck Jr.

Henry “Stuart” Buck, Jr., 74, went home to be with the Lord on Saturday, October 10, 2020 in Suffolk, Virginia. Stuart was a loving, kind-hearted, patient man who shared his life for 42 years with his wife, Becky. There was no shortage of good times, and all the in-between times that build a strong marriage. He was a wonderful father to their two daughters, Michelle Mercado and Patricia Hodges; his son-in-law, Joshua Hodges; and four grandchildren, Garrett and Luke Hodges, Noel Mercado, and Natalie Willard.

Stuart had a very long and satisfying career in the profession he loved, civil engineering. He worked as a project engineer and inspector on heavy construction jobs like paper mills, highways, tunnels, bridges. He appreciated the people and the projects they did together such as the Chesapeake Bay Bridge-Tunnel Parallel Crossing, the Portsmouth Tunnel, and highway jobs in Virginia and Maryland. Due to health issues, he retired in 2016 from Jacobs Engineering.

His lifelong hobby of model trains led him to join the Atlantic Coast S Gaugers (ACSG) Tidewater Division where he was able to participate at his pace, and enjoy the spirit of friendship and community.

Stuart was a proud Vietnam veteran, U.S. Army! He will be at eternal rest in the Albert G. Horton, Jr. Memorial Veterans Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Stuart’s memory to Union Mission Ministries, Norfolk Virginia www.unionmissionministries.org

A closer glimpse of Stuart:

“Life is short. What an understatement! The older I get the faster time passes. It wasn’t that long ago I was a kid growing up in West Point, Virginia, the only child of Henry Stuart Buck and Evelyn Mae Bagby Buck.

Nobody has ever had a more loving family growing up, for which I’m extremely grateful. Don’t get me wrong, we had our learning curves, the ins and outs that come with the territory, and the seasons of life we all experience walking this earth. But we were family, there for each other more often than not, depending on which season, and always when the chips were down.

I was baptized as a baby, an altar boy, confirmed, took communion, always active in the church while living with my parents. Then, I went to Lees-McRae College, to Vietnam, and back to college for my BS in civil engineering at Old Dominion. Since Vietnam in ‘68, I had not attended church regularly until I met Becky in Mobile, Alabama in Dec 1977. Eventually I came full circle back to the work the Lord began in me as a child.

Nobody is 100% of the time putting in the effort it takes to be close-knit with family and friends. We all have our strengths and weaknesses, our shining moments and the not so shining times we’d much rather forget. Maybe we just think too much, and just need to forgive ourselves and forgive others like the Bible says. And, remember His ways are perfect and eternal. In Him, we have life everlasting. If anyone asks me today if I’m a Christian, my answer is Yes, by the grace of God alone.”

I just can't believe that I am so out of touch that I just saw this!!! I am so sorry to hear that Stuart has died. There are so many fond memories. Stuart was such a wonderful, kind person. He was always so positive and sweet and a good friend to everyone. Many great nights as teenagers were spent at his home with his equally fun and loving parents. Becky, I know that he was so happy with you and that he must have been a wonderful husband, father, and grandfather. My thoughts are with you all. Much love, Vicki

Dear Becky, I am so glad that we have been in touch since the loss of dear Stuart. Thank you for sending the photo's and the video of the memorial service. As you know, Stuart was a good friend since high school in West Point. After college I moved to San Francisco with a college friend. Not long afterwards, Stuart, who was in the Army, was deployed to Viet Nam. He had an Army buddy (Ted) who lived in the Bay Area and had him contact me. When Stuart completed his tour in Viet Nam, he stopped in San Francisco before going home to Virginia. We called his parents. First I spoke with his Mom and Dad, but didn't tell him Stuart was in S.F. Then Ted spoke with them, and told them there was someone else who wanted to speak with them, and Stuart took the phone. Oh, they were so ecstatic to hear his voice and he couldn't stop smiling! It is one of my fondest memories of him. Becky, my thoughts and prayers are with you and your family.

I am very saddened to hear of Stuart's passing but I know he is now home and celebrating his return. My deepest sympathies to Becky, and her family.

I am so sorry too lose my Best Friend, life will never be the same without talking to one of the most caring and thoughtful people on the face of this earth. I will always miss you Stu! Your Friend Forever Chandler

Becky & Family: We praise the Lord for you and Stuarts friendship that goes all the way back to the Bible study days at First Baptist Church Norfolk. We recall the get togethers at our house & yours and particularly that one marathon pinochle game and the endless cups of coffee that Stuart always enjoyed. Because Stuart was a civil engineer and in construction of many great projects, John 14: 2-3 comes to mind. The Lord has prepared a mansion for Stuart and has received him to Himself. I was very sad to hear of Stuart Bucks passing. Lord please provide comfort to his family and friends with the knowledge that he was not only a very kind man, but very respected in his career. I had the pleasure of working with Stuart after Jacobs acquired Sverdrup. The company named to J.E/Sverdrup for a while. Stuart made sure we all knew he was from Sverdrup! I chuckle at that til this day! We worked on pretty big water projects in Richmond and then in Hanover Co. TWWTP off Pole Green Rd. Stuarts love for Becky and his family was a wonderful thing to hear about. He loved his two aunts that live together in a small cottage. I remember he had a 70's Ford Ranchero he really liked and drove to work one day. I'd never seen one and he thought I was funny. Becky and family please accept my sincere condolences. Stuart was a good man.

I knew Stuart only as my landlord. I rent the West Point house owned by he and his wife Becky. I would say in the overall scheme of life, few people make a positive lasting impression on others, especially if their interactions are limited. But, I can say that Stuart made an extremely positive impression on me. Unassuming, helpful, patient and genuinely kind, I can’t imagine meeting a nicer person. RIP sir... I’m confident the lord has prepared an especially good place for you. ❤️

We are very sorry to hear of Stuart's passing and are praying for the family. We had the privilege of worshipping with Stuart and Becky for a good number of years and also partnering with them through Child Evangelism Fellowship! Both Stuart and Becky invested their time, interest, support, and even their energy in keeping up with teenagers as they reached children for Christ! Stuart's encouraging and positive demeanor and Christ focused actions were an encouragement to us as well as to the many lives that he touched. Becky and Stuart were indeed a fantastic team that God put together in a beautiful way! Wonderful friends, great ministry partners, and great mentors. We look forward to seeing him again in heaven!

It was great to have worked with you Stuart. May God comfort your family's loss of Stuart's missing presence in their lives. He was a good man and I thank him for teaching me "Red right return." I think of Stuart every time I see the navigational markers that guide the ships in and out of the harbor. So sorry for your loss of such a good man.

Stuart was a great friend of our family and he & Jack worked shoulder to shoulder on numerous paper mill construction projects at Tidewater Construction. His knowledge and experience in engineering and construction will surely be missed. We wish Becky and the family all the best during this time and our prayers are with the you all. JRC & LEC

Stuart was a great guy and had a good sense of humor. He will be missed. I look forward to seeing him in again in Heaven. Though over the last years we did not see each other, he was still my brother in law and my Christian brother. I pray for God to bring peace and comfort to the family in the trying days ahead.

Stuart was a kind and wonderful man. When he found something funny, he was infectious with his laugh and had a subtle sense of humor. I know I will miss him and knowing that we will meet again gives me peace and a great sense of looking forward to seeing him. Though over the last years we did not see each other, he was still my brother in Christ and memories of younger years popped up often. I've only known Trisha a few years but what a wonderful woman she is and and that is always tribute to parents. I am sorry for your loss. I never had the pleasure of meeting Mr. Buck in the 9 years I have known Trisha but I always enjoyed seeing the pictures and posts from him on Facebook. I remember a few years back I gave Trisha an 8 foot minion for her front yard, I downsized my home after a death, and the minions name was Stuart which we both laughed about. I love Trisha and her family, they have been there for me through 2 deaths in my life and I will be here for them at this time and forever. We came to together through the marriage of our children. I watched him delight in watching the grandchildren in their various sports. He was a generous and kind man and he will be missed. May the God of all comfort draw you close.

Stuart was a true Friend, yes with a capital “F”. In our Junior year at WPHS, I broke my leg playing football. After 30 days in the hospital and 30 days at home, I returned to school on crutches wondering how I would get myself and my books to class. When 1st period bell rang, Stuart picked up his pile of books, set then on top of my pile of books and carried a double pile of books from class to class for nearly 4 months He did that out of the goodness of his huge and loving heart. I thanked him every day and hour and he just shrugged it off as if his action was the natural thing to do. For him, it was. Stuart, once more I thank you for carrying my books; but, more importantly, for being my Friend. We shall meet again in the Sweet By and By.

Please accept my heartfelt condolences for the loss of Mr. Buck. I know he'll be sadly missed. May he rest in peace and may you find comfort in knowing that he has gone home to our good Lord.

Becky and family, Clay and I are so sorry to learn of Stuart's passing. He was a classmate and we grew up about three blocks from each other.
