Virginia Beach- Hilda Louise Davis, 96, of Virginia Beach passed away on December 27th. She was predeceased by her parents, Rose Callahan Davis and Oscar Reed Davis of Norfolk, sister Carrie Mildred (Tootsie) Cain, and brother Oscar Waller (Buddy) Davis. She was also predeceased by her former husband, William James (Jimmy) Meehan, Jr. She is survived by her son, William James (Jim) Meehan III, granddaughter Melanie Meehan-Dowe and her husband Eddie Dowe and great grandson Noah Leif Dowe of Virginia Beach.
Mrs. Davis was born November 16th 1921 in Indianapolis, IN where her father, a Roanoke, VA policeman, kept his family as he worked undercover in Chicago as a Prohibition Agent. She grew up in Norfolk and graduated from Maury High School in 1940. After attending business school, she was one of the first female employees of the Norfolk Police Department in 1942, becoming a file clerk and stenographer as male employees left for the armed forces at the beginning of World War II. Leaving the Police Department in 1959, she was employed by the National Center for Health Statistics in Washington, DC. There she worked to improve health care delivery through the implementation of statistical surveys of the entire US population. She retired from the Center in 1985 and moved to Virginia Beach. She worked again for the City of Norfolk through the 1990’s logging in and tracking police and fire department radio equipment for repair.
The family wishes to thank the staff of Atria Senior Living, Virginia Beach, Westminster Canterbury Hospice Care, and of Our Lady of Perpetual Help, Virginia Beach, for their compassionate care of Mrs. Davis in her later years.
Mrs. Davis will be laid to rest privately at Forest Lawn Cemetery in Norfolk.
