Irene (Rene) Ann Hudak Childers, 69, passed away on October 10, 2016. Rene was born in El Paso Texas to Irene S. Hudak and Edward M. Hudak, who preceded her in death along with her nephew David M. Slaysman. Rene’s father was a career Army officer and they lived in many places throughout the United States before settling in Norfolk.
Rene attended Norfolk Catholic High School and graduated in 1965. She then went on to receive her Bachelor of Arts and Masters in Education from Old Dominion University. Rene taught in Norfolk Public Schools for 8 years and in Virginia Beach Public Schools for 15 years. It was in her first year of teaching that she met her future husband Bob when he was substitute teaching at her school. In her many years as a teacher she was able to inspire countless Precious Angels as she followed her life’s passion of working with children. Rene was also active in the Catholic Church. She spent 12 years as the Director of Religious Education at St Mark’s Catholic Church. She then practiced her faith at Church of the Ascension where her bright smile and strong faith will be fondly remembered. After living in Virginia Beach for 40 years and raising their children, Rene fulfilled her dream of retiring on the beach, when she and Bob downsized to a condo in Willoughby Spit where she was able to spend her days visiting with friends, watching grandchildren, traveling with the love of her life, and taking in the glory of God’s creations.
Rene will be remembered and cherished by her husband of 45 years E. Robert (Bob) Childers Jr, her son Kevin David Childers and wife Sonja , and her daughter Courtney Kathleen Garrett and husband Tim. She is adored by her three grandchildren, Victoria Grace Arrington, Kenley Ann Garrett and Piper Rose Garrett. She is also loved and remembered by her three siblings Kathie Slaysman, Edward Hudak and Dave Hudak and many nieces and nephews.
Please join us in Celebrating Rene’s amazing strength, bright smile, and a life full of love at the memorial service being held on Monday October 17th at 5:00 p.m. at the Church of the Ascension in Virginia Beach. The family asks that in lieu of flowers donations be made to the American Cancer Society in Rene’s memory at www.cancer.org.
