With hearts full of gratitude and sorrow, we announce the passing of our beloved mother, Irma Quinones Reyes Cordero, on March 28, 2026 in Newport News, Virginia. A woman of extraordinary beauty, strength, and grace, she lived a full life and gave herself to many over the years so that they, too, could learn of the love of Christ, her Savior.
From humble beginnings in Hato Rey, Rio Piedras, Puerto Rico, Irma built a life defined by devotion. She was a devoted daughter and sister, and wife to the late Jose Jacinto Cordero. As well, she was a proud mother of four children. Irma was born August 5, 1941 to the late Arturo Quinones Arasil and Maria Agustina Reyes Pena.
When reminiscing of her childhood, one of her favorite stories was of the love for her grandparents. She said that she would go to her grandparents’ house every Sunday. She noted how special she felt that the crystal and fine china would be used– not the plastic stuff everyone else used with kids! “My mother would put me in a beautiful dress to go over there, and my dad would drive me in his Cadillac. He loved Cadillac cars; he even drove me to school every day in one of his Cadillacs!”
After high school, Irma graduated from Dr. Miguel Such Vocational School for Cosmetology. She was able to work part-time in a salon and model on the side—all jobs she so loved.
Irma and the love of her life, Jose, got married in 1965 and happily lived in San Juan. After the birth of their first child, they relocated to Ponce, where Irma ran a beauty salon in her home. She noted in an interview, “It began because some of the local girls needed a place to get their hair done on Mondays but no one was open then– so they asked me to do their hair in my home on Mondays. So I did and before I knew it I had my own salon.”
A highlight of Irma’s life occurred when a friend invited her to a Bible class. After attending several times, she received Jesus Christ in her life and came home a different person. Her husband soon followed her in that path. It was not long before they moved into ministry and co-pastored Iglesia Cristiana Los Evangelios for decades. Jose and Irma also went on to study for four years at Mizpa Pentecostal University. As well, Irma served as the Secretary for the Ministerial del Sur, a support organization for independent Pentecostal churches in Puerto Rico.
Irma is survived by a brother, Arturo Quinones Reyes, and a sister, Maria Teresa Quinones Reyes. She is also survived by her children, Joehassin (Julie) Cordero, Stephen Cordero, Irmarie Lespinasse (Roberto), and Liza Cordero, as well as six grandchildren and three great grandchildren.
Arrangements are under the direction of Cremation Society of Virginia – Newport News Office.
