Irvine Clark McCann, 100, died December 21, 2023 in Virginia Beach, Virginia. Born December 16, 1923 in Decatur, Indiana, he was the son of John Harvey McCann (minister)and Grace (Clark) McCann (teacher). Irvine attended Bowling Green University and then University of Michigan, until he entered the Navy in 1943. He served in the South Pacific and then at the Naval Service Training Command on the Great Lakes until 1946. He then reentered University of Michigan and finished a degree in education in 1948. He also met his wife, Wilda Fern Wood, on the U of M campus and married her December 27, 1947. He taught junior high for 3 years and was a pharmaceutical representative for McKesson for 32 years until his retirement.
Irvine is predeceased by his wife Wilda of 65 years, and two siblings, John and Janet. He is survived by his sister Martha and three children- Ann, Lorraine and Linda- six grandchildren- Brendan, Luke, Robyn, Jon, Christina and Hannah- four great grandchildren- Harper, Graham, Elliot and Desmond- and many nieces and nephews.
What Irvine cared most about was doing the right thing and being a good husband, father and friend. He also was very generous and genuinely wanted to help people. Irvine delivered Meals on Wheels and tutored reading to underprivileged children in the Detroit area. He dedicated much of his time to the Southfield United Presbyterian Church, where he taught Sunday school, and served as a deacon and elder for many years.
Irvine McCann is remembered as a physically imposing but soft-spoken man with a quick smile and a good sense of humor. He liked talking with people which was why he was such a good salesman. He liked vegetable gardening and had to chase many wild critters out of his garden. He also enjoyed restoring furniture and took pride in his collection of family antiques and the stories associated with them.
He will be greatly missed by his family and all the people he touched in his long life.
Irvine’s ashes will be interred in the Memorial Garden at the First Presbyterian Church of Farmington, 26165 Farmington Rd, Farmington Hills, MI 48334.
