Jack Downing Hamilton of Williamsburg went home with Jesus his Savior on August 21st after a 3-year cancer battle. Jack was born in Newport News on January 27, 1950, the son of the late Rev. Jack L. and Mary N. Hamilton. He was a loving and devoted father and grandfather. He is survived by his two children; daughter, Kelly Cook, and son, Taylor Hamilton (wife Taylor), and 6 grandchildren, Madison, Natalie, Melanie, Alexa, Lucas and Annabelle. He is also survived by four siblings and their spouses; Dick Hamilton (Lori), Betty Kern (Wayne), Carol Snyder (Jerry), and Jim Hamilton (Debbie); plus 6 nephews, 4 nieces and numerous great nieces and nephews.
Jack was a 1969 graduate of Warwick High School in Newport News. He served in the U. S. Navy. He was a dealer of rare books, historical documents and collectibles for over 40 years, was also known for his expertise in appraisals. During his career, he had shops in Newport News, Gloucester and Williamsburg. Jack was a wealth of knowledge of authors and history and he loved “the hunt” for something rare.
In recent years, Jack actively attended Eastside Church in Williamsburg, where he was given much encouragement, support and love. His faith grew stronger as did his desire for others to know the love of Jesus and the forgiveness and peace he had found. Although Jack was personable with a quick wit and a ready smile, generous, ready to help, honest and kind, he would say, “I’m just a sinner saved by God’s grace.” He truly believed the words of Jesus: “I am the resurrection and the life. He who believes in Me, though he may die, he shall live.” He will be greatly missed by his family and friends and the birds he faithfully fed and enjoyed!
A memorial service will be held September 12th at Eastside Church officiated by Rev. Doug Bunn. In lieu of flowers a memorial donation can be made to Eastside Church, 473 Merrimac Trail, Williamsburg, VA 23185.
