Suffolk- Jacquelyn Barnes Hilemn passed away on Monday, April 2, 2018. She was surrounded by her daughters and peacefully went to be with the Lord. “Jackie”, the only child of Alphonzo “Jack” Barnes and Bronnie Barnes (Price) was born in Wilson, North Carolina on November 15, 1935. She used her love of reading and writing to launch her early career in advertising with the local radio station. She won the Sanford Beauty Contest at age 19 in which she placed as 3rd runner-up for Miss North Carolina, later catching the eye of Charles “Chuck” Hilemn whom she married in 1956. They had four daughters, the love and joy of their lives. Jackie had a soft spot in her heart for pets. Their household was filled with dogs, cats, gerbils, birds, horses and a monkey. Chuck and Jackie owned several businesses including Hilemn Labs with Chuck’s brothers in Greensboro, North Carolina along with CoverCraft, and Silver Service in Chicago, Illinois. Jackie was a dog breeder and professionally showed Old English Sheepdogs. She took in and cared for children waiting for foster care. After Chuck’s death in 1986, Jackie moved to Virginia Beach and began her new life with her daughters. She worked for Farm Fresh as the “Ask Me” lady, a job she enjoyed for several years before retiring to her crossword puzzles and her books. Jackie was well-known for her fried chicken, home made chicken and dumplings and Carolina cooking. She had a quick-wit, loved a good glass of wine and believed in all underdogs. Jackie surrounded herself with her pets but she took immense joy in a unique relationship with each of her daughters. Left to mourn her loss are her daughters, Sherry Gibson (Rich), Alysia Dale Pirrone (Yann), Lane JaBaay, (Corey) and Leigh Morehead and extended family in Virginia, North Carolina and Maryland. The family wishes to the thank the staff at Commonwealth Leigh Hall, Norfolk and Commonwealth Churchland House, Portsmouth for their care and love of Jackie. The family will gather at a later date to remember her life in a private memorial.
