James C. Spencer
Virginia Beach – James C. Spencer passed away on April 21, 2015, at the age of 93. He is survived by son James (Therese Harkins), daughter Shirley Hiser (Michael), grandchildren David Spencer (Lauren) and Christina Hicks (Michael), 3 great grandsons, and his sisters Shirley Hufty and Barbara Jean Collins (Robert). He was predeceased by his wife Ruby after 59 years of marriage.
A 55-year resident of the Lynnhaven area, Jim was a founding member of King’s Grant Presbyterian Church, charter member of the Lynnhaven Masonic Lodge #220 AF & AM, veteran member of Norfolk United Royal Arch Chapter No. 1, and past Scoutmaster of Boy Scout Troop 416. He sang in church choirs for over 60 years, and was a lifelong railroad and model train enthusiast. He worked 43 years for the Bell System and received many awards from Lions Clubs for his eye safety program. At the time he retired, Jim was responsible for all underground telephone cable installation and repairs for Va. Beach and half of Norfolk. He was a lifetime member and past president of the Tidewater Telephone Pioneers service organization, and sang in the group’s chorus. Jim served in the Army Signal Corps in the Pacific in WWII. He graduated from Maury High School.
A memorial service for James C. Spencer will be held at King’s Grant Presbyterian Church on Saturday, May 9, at 5:00 PM.
In lieu of flowers, donations are suggested in his name to the Kings Grant Presbyterian Church Memorials & Endowments Fund, the Alzheimer’s Association, or Virginia Institute of Marine Science.
