James (Jimmy) Calvin Smith, 75, passed away on Thursday, October 12th, 2023 in Chesapeake, VA. James was with his son, daughter, grandson and still caring ex-wife. James was born on November 20, 1947 to Lloyd and Daisy Smith. James was a graduate of Ferguson High School, Class of 1966, in Newport News, VA.

In life Jimmy was a high school athlete, excelling in football, wrestling, and baseball. He served in Korea in the U.S. Army. Jimmy also worked at Newport News Shipbuilding and spent most of his career including retiring from the Daily Press.

Jimmy was preceded in death by his parents, Lloyd and Daisy and his sister Nancy, and is survived by his brother, Daniel Smith, his son, Alan Smith, his daughter Susan Riggs, his daughter-in-law Nicole Smith, 3 grandchildren, Christian Riggs, Tori Templeton, and Maverick Smith, by numerous nieces and nephews, and by his still caring ex-wife Helen Estes.

Jimmy was an avid motorcycle rider, finally achieving the dream of owning a Harley Davidson and cruising around upon his retirement. Also enjoying fishing, hunting, cheese balls, peanut butter M&M’s, and golf (finally besting his son in the last round they played). His passion was working on old cars/motorcycles and restoring them to period correct condition.

A celebration of life will be held on December 10th, 2023 from 2pm-5pm at Hampton Friends Church Fellowship Hall located at 1062 Big Bethel Road Hampton, VA 23666.
