Norfolk- Jim Hughes left his worries behind on July 23rd after being released from the hospital the afternoon before. His kindness, good humor and storytelling will be sorely missed by his good friend Leon Ward and his family Rick Hughes, Bob and Pam Hughes, Roy and Barbara Watenpool, Greg Hughes and Sue Sendele, Stan and Mary Stone, Doug and Renee Hughes, Terrell and Judy Shaddix, and many loved nieces and nephews.
Jim was born in Utica, New York in St. Luke’s hospital on November 14, 1946. Jim was a student at Old Dominion University and a brother of Delta Sigma Phi where he made many lasting friends. During and after college he had a myriad of jobs before landing a civil service job at Norfolk Naval shipyard. He had a long civil service career ending with his retirement from Fort Eustis. Jim dabbled in real estate for over four decades helping many people find homes. At various times he gave back to his community by serving on the Ocean View Coordinating Committee, Bay View Civic League, and Ocean View Lions Club. He worked hard to make the Ocean View museum at the Pretlow library a reality.
Online condolences may be expressed at vacremationsociety.com. The family would greatly appreciate memorial contributions made in Jim’s name to either the American Heart Association or the American Cancer Society.
