James H. Fentress Sr., better known as Jimmy, born March 31st, 1938, passed away at his home in Little Neck, surrounded by his children on Thursday morning, April 2nd, 2026. He provided a great life for his family with a successful career of over fifty years as an accountant/CPA. He worked with Waller & Woodhouse for many years and later started a proprietorship as Fentress and Webb, PC, until retirement. He was a wonderful man who served as the moral compass for his family.
He enjoyed growing up in South Norfolk, where his extended Fentress family surrounded him. He graduated from Oscar Smith High School and earned a full scholarship from Smith Douglas to attend and graduate from Elon College in NC. He was a loving husband, brother, servant, leader, dad, grandad, and friend.
He was predeceased by his loving wife of over fifty-seven years, Patsy Duncan Fentress, his mother, Ruby Moore, and his father, Marvin Fentress, who passed away when he was only fourteen years old. Jimmy is survived by his loving children: his son, James H. Fentress Jr. and family; his daughter and caregiver, Patricia Fentress Standing and family; and his youngest daughter, Jennifer Fentress Hardgrave and family. He is also survived by his sisters, Phyllis Butler and family in California, Sally Bielat and family in Virginia Beach, and stepbrother Doug Moore in Richmond. He has many extended family members and friends who will miss him dearly.
He was a quick-witted man who would put a smile on the face of anyone who met him, and that was quite a few. He could tell a story like no other. His warmth and kindness were felt instantly and will be missed. He loved fishing and gardening, but most of all being with his family. We will cherish the memories of the many celebrations and trips with the family that spanned Jimmy’s lifetime.
What a wonderful life he led. Thank you, Lord Jesus, for Jimmy Fentress, and may he rest in peace. There will be a Celebration of Life at a future date.
