James Hubert Woodall Jr., a cherished husband, father, brother, and friend, passed away peacefully on May 16, 2025, in Williamsburg, VA, at the age of 91. Born on June 26, 1933, in Hampton, VA, James lived a life marked by dedication, love, and an unyielding spirit of exploration.
James began his career at Newport News Shipbuilding in 1951 as an apprentice, demonstrating an exceptional aptitude for electrical design. His ambition and hard work propelled him through the ranks, ultimately leading to his role as head of the department. Over his 34-year tenure, James not only contributed to the success of countless projects but also mentored many young professionals who followed in his footsteps.
Beyond his professional achievements, James was a man of diverse interests and deep passions. He cherished playing softball with his father, serving as the catcher for their team—a testament to their close bond and shared love of the game. His adventurous spirit found expression in camping trips with his family, where he delighted in exploring Revolutionary War sites across the eastern United States. This love of history and adventure was a gift he passed on to his son, Robert A. Woodall.
An active member of Waynesboro, VA Main Street Methodist Church before the pandemic, James was known for his unwavering faith and commitment to his community. His education included graduating from the apprentice program with an Associate’s degree in electrical design—a foundation that would support his remarkable career.
James is preceded in death by his beloved parents, Lola Woodall and James Woodall Sr. He is survived by his devoted wife, Nancy Mead Woodall; his sons, Robert Alan Woodall and Thomas Edward Woodall; his sister, Margie Johnson; his niece, Stephanie Johnson; and a large, loving extended family.
