James “Jim” Hurbert Coleman, aged 76, passed away peacefully on September 12, 2024 with his loving wife by his side. Born on January 8, 1948 in Afton, Virginia. Jim was a kind, gentle soul who touched the lives of all who knew him. A devout Christian, Jim lived his life with grace, humility, and unwavering faith, always extending kindness and a helping hand to those around him.
Jim had a passion for fishing, spending countless hours by the water, casting lines, and enjoying the peace and beauty of nature. It was in these quiet moments that he felt closest to God, finding solace in the simplicity of life’s natural rhythms.
Jim loved serving the Lord and was a member and deacon of Calvary Baptist Church in Portsmouth, Virginia.
Jim showed his love for his family and friends through quiet acts of service. He often helped where he saw the need without being asked; loved ones often found their grass cut when they got home from work, hand-made furniture built or repaired, or he baked his famous homemade chocolate chip cookies or yellow cake with chocolate icing.
He is survived by his loving spouse, Mary Ann Lanier-Coleman; sister, Ann C. Kitchen; children, James “Brad” Bradley Coleman (Michelle Coleman), Deana DeVault (Bryan DeVault, Sr.) and Thomas Lanier; grandchildren, Bryan DeVault, Jr. (Adriana DeVault), Stephanie Nolen (Charles Nolen, II), Nicholas DeVault (Rose DeVault), and Darrell DeVault; great grandchildren Gabriel DeVault, Jackson DeVault, Charles Nolen, III, Lucy DeVault, and Arthur Nolen; nephew, Jeff Coleman (Rhonda Coleman); and many cherished friends and family members in Virginia, Texas, and New York. His legacy of love, patience, kindness, and faith will continue to live on in the hearts of all who knew him.
Rest in peace, Jim. You will be deeply missed, but your love and spirit will forever be remembered.
