JAMES LEON BYRUM, III, 67, departed his earthly life on February 25, 2024, surrounded by his wife, Beth Ann Byrum, his son, James, and close family.
Born on August 26, 1956, in Portsmouth, VA, Jimmy was the son of the late James Leon Byrum, Jr. (‘Big Jimmy’) and Anne Byrum. He joins his grandparents, Leon and Mary Byrum, Uncle Melvin Byrum, and Aunts Dolores Byrum Powell and Linda Byrum Rapier, in eternal rest.
Jimmy leaves behind a legacy of love of family and friends that he cherished above all else. He was a friend to all, made everyone laugh – he never met a stranger. Jimmy is survived by his devoted wife of 34 years, Beth Ann, and their son, James L. Byrum, IV. He will also be deeply missed by his sisters, Suzanne Robertson (Mark) and her son, Curtis, and Melinda Simmons‐Healy (Mike) and children, Kenny, Kamela, and Karson. His memory will continue to be cherished by Uncle Bobby Byrum (Pat), cousins Sherry Powell‐Brice (Tammy), Jeff Powell (Laura), Len Byrum (Lisa), Amy Gillikin (Ronnie), Laura Byrum, Thomas Rapier (Angie), their children, grandchildren, and extended family members.
A 1974 graduate of Indian River High School in Chesapeake, he brought joy and humor to everyone around him. Jimmy was bigger than life, a vibrant soul, and always the true “life of the party.” Jimmy and his sister, Suzanne, were top dancers at the Sub Teen dance hall for teenagers. Young Jimmy was sought after by many to be dance partner all around town – known for his ability to synch with anyone on the dance floor, including his aunts. A natural musician, Jimmy’s passion for drums began at a young age. He played with various bands throughout his youth, playing at venues such as the Moose Lodge and dance halls even before he was old enough to walk through the front door. He was drummer on The Johnny Steele Show, a weekend TV show watched by his family who thought he was famous being on TV. His musical career included Jimmy filling in as drummer with legendary musicians like Bill Deal and the Rhondels and others. Jimmy’s love for music continued throughout his life, most recently with the Coastal Motion Band, showcasing his talent for oldies and beach music, with his wife and son by his side. Jimmy’s dedication extended beyond music. He was a skilled craftsman, following in the footsteps of his uncles. He worked in electrical, roofing, and vinyl siding before establishing his own business, Byrum Home Repairs. His home and yard is a reflection of skills and talent, envied by neighbors.
While Jimmy’s passing leaves a void, his infectious laughter, kind heart, and unwavering spirit will forever remain a cherished memory in the hearts of those who loved him.
