James Patrick Herron, affectionately known as Jim, passed away peacefully on Monday, June 2, 2025, in Virginia Beach, Virginia. He was 75 years old.
Born on February 25, 1950, in Waynesburg, Pennsylvania, Jim was the son of the late Joseph and Louise Herron. He was raised in Scenery Hill, Pennsylvania, where he developed a lifelong love for sports, the outdoors, and camaraderie—values that would shape his life and career.
A proud graduate of Bentworth High School in Bentleyville, Pennsylvania, Jim stood out as a gifted athlete and natural leader. He earned varsity letters in football all four years—a rare and impressive achievement that spoke volumes about his talent, work ethic, and determination.
While attending California State College in Pennsylvania, Jim met his wife, Becky. They married and moved to Indiana, where Jim pursued his passion for education, earning a Master’s Degree from Ball State University. His career as an educator began in Indiana, where he taught elementary school and coached football at the middle and high school levels. His dedication to students and athletes left a lasting impact that many still remember and cherish.
After Indiana, Jim and Becky made Virginia Beach, Virginia, their home, where Jim embarked on the project of a lifetime. He built a unique and striking dome house that became a landmark in the neighborhood, admired by all who passed by. In Virginia Beach, Jim continued to make a difference in education by impacting the lives of students as a teacher at Career Development Center, and coaching football at Bayside High School, before ultimately finishing his career as an Assistant Principal at Princess Anne Middle School.
Beyond his professional contributions, Jim was also involved in his community. He volunteered as a Youth Leader at Virginia Beach United Methodist Church. He also served on the Board of Directors for the Virginia Beach Schools Federal Credit Union and was an active member of the Virginia Beach Sports Club. A man of many interests, Jim also enjoyed annual visits to Las Vegas, and had a lifelong love of horse racing, delighting in the thrill of the track.
Jim is survived by his wife of 53 years, Becky; his beloved sister, Peggy Pecuch; sister-in-law, Elaine Herron; sister-in-law, Karen Headley; his three sons—Todd, Thad, and Tyler; daughter-in-law Jamie; eight grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his parents, Joseph and Louise Herron; his brothers Fran and Carl, who supported him in all his endeavors; and brother-in-law, Larry Headley. A devoted fisherman, hunter, and passionate fan of all sports—especially his favorite team, the Pittsburgh Steelers—Jim found joy in the simple pleasures of life and the company of those he loved.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that you go offshore fishing, enjoy a meal at a nice restaurant, or contribute to the Wounded Warrior Project. Do something that brings you joy and reminds you to savor life, just as Jim always did.
